RSV

Respiratory Syncytial Virus = NO FUN!!!

There we were enjoying the next chapter in our lives.
Kyson was adjusting well and we all couldn't get enough of sweet little Claire.
Two weeks later, Kyson came down with a cough. We really didn't think much of it as he has had many colds in his short little life.
But then he spiked a 104 degree fever Thursday night. I gave him some Tylenol, made sure it broke then put him to bed. Friday morning he was feeling much better. Still a little under the weather but no fever.
Then that night, he spiked another fever of 101 but he also had fast labored breathing and was very lethargic. That's when we decided to take him to instacare. I stayed home with Claire and Eric took Kyson. They were worried about his breathing and did an x-ray to check for pneumonia. that was negative. I then get a call from Eric saying they want to admit him to the hospital to keep an eye on him over night.
My heart sank. The first hospital stay for any of our kids.
I wanted SO BADLY to be there with him but because RSV is so contagious, Claire was not allowed on that floor and since I'm nursing, I couldn't leave her.
Eric stayed the night with Kyson. Neither of them got much sleep. Poor little Kyson was on oxygen and had a pulse oximeter on his two. Although he tolerated it very well, he still hated being there.
Eric needed sleep Saturday so I pumped a few ounces and had Eric's mom watch Claire for a few hours while Eric come home and got some sleep.
It broke my heart when I walked in his room and saw him sitting on Daddy's lap hooked up to machines with the most tired looking eyes.
His oxygen levels were still low and dipped even lower when he slept so they wanted to keep him another night.
Eric had to stay with him again and that night was worse.
Between checking vitals every few hours, suctioning his nose, doing breathing treatments and sleeping on uncomfortable beds with horrible pillows...neither of them got any sleep.
By this time Kyson was Exhausted!!!!! He was VERY irritable and I could tell his poor little body needed sleep before he was going to get any better. I knew he needed to be home!!
We did the same thing again Sunday so Eric could get some rest and I could spend time with my sweet little boy.
We begged the Doctors to let us take him home even if they sent us home with oxygen. They had to discuss it as a team and call his pediatrician. They finally gave us the ok Sunday evening and we couldn't have been more excited.
Home health delivered his oxygen, suctioning machine and nebulizer.
Sunday night was a MUCH need night of great sleep especially for Kyson. He slept better Sunday and Monday night than he has ever slept in his life.
I knew that's exactly what he needed!!
Over the next few days we were told to keep him completely away from Claire and other kids. This was very difficult as we had to wash our hands, face, arms or anything that touched Kyson before we could touch Claire.
The only way this was possible was for Eric and Kyson to live downstairs while Claire and I lived upstairs.
Needless to say it was a relief when the Doctor told us Tuesday that he could be around people now as long as he wore a mask while he was still coughing.
As of now, he is 100% back to normal.
Claire did catch a cold but it never turned into RSV.

Thank you to everyone who kept us in their prayers and who offered to help in any way!!
We have Amazing friends, family and neighbors!!

Our Little Princess

Claire's Birth Story

Tuesday February 25th started out like any normal Tuesday.
It was a late night at work so I went in at 9:00am and our last patient is usually around 7:00pm.
I had the normal Braxton Hicks contractions all day. And by all day I mean I would usually get about 6-8 an hour depending on what I was doing. I started getting them before I was even 20 weeks.
Then around 6:30 I had a contraction that was a little more uncomfortable and then another one on my drive home. They were not painful just more uncomfortable than usual.
My Mom and Tommy came down that night for some Doctor's appointments that Tommy had Wednesday morning.
We were all sitting in the living room when I told Eric that we may have to cancel some plans we had for Saturday night because I had a few uncomfortable contractions earlier and we may have a baby before then. I don't think he really believed me that the baby may be here sooner than expected.
We went to bed around 10:30 and around 11:00 I had my first painful contraction. From then on, they were getting more and more painful and closer in time. By 3:30 it was "toe curling, crying, squeezing Eric's hand so hard" kind of pain. They were about 6 minutes apart and I couldn't take it anymore.
"I think we need to go!!!!"
I didn't have a bag packed so I packed what I could between the pains and having to stop doubled over in extreme pain with each contraction.
My Mom and Tommy were planning on leaving around 5:30am so Eric asked if she would be able to stay with Kyson. She of course said yes and we left.
Eric gave me a quick blessing and we were out the door!
By the time we got in the truck and were on our way, my contractions were about 2-3 minutes apart and I wanted to DIE!!!!!!!
My sweet husband encouraged me the whole way - "You can do this Babe!! I know you can!!"
They checked me as soon as I got to McKay Dee and I was dilated to a 5!
I was GBS positive so they were rushing to get the antibiotic in me since I have to be on it for 4 hours before I can deliver.
They took me into the delivery room and got me ready for the epidural.
I'm pretty sure the anesthesiologist wasn't in any real hurry and took his sweet time because it seemed like FOREVER!!!!!
Finally...the pains started to go away and I could relax.
I was already Exhausted!!!
Four hours later, they checked me again and I was at 8cm.
My water had broke but not completely.
They called my Doctor.
She got there a little after 9:00am.
"Ok, let's break your water and get things started"
She checks me again!
"Never mind! You're complete! Lets have a baby!!"
We called Eric's mom to watch Kyson so my mom could come to the hospital.
She walked in the door minutes before Julia told me to push.
Three easy pushes later...Claire Hannah Rice was born at 9:30am. Less than 5 minutes after she broke my water.
She weighed 6lbs 11oz and was 19.5 inches long.
Beautiful and Healthy!!!
Unfortunately we don't have many pictures of her delivery. Eric literally didn't have time to take any.

We are so In Love with our new addition!!
Kyson is already a Wonderful Big Brother who can't stop kissing her!!
We are so blessed and thankful for our little family!!
